Balalahari children in action - at the Telugu Association of Greater Boston (TAGB) Diwali Celebrations

Purpose:

To introduce our indian children growing up here in U.S.A, to the hindu heritage, culture, and traditions through indian moral stories, slokas, and hindu mythelogical stories.

Goals & Objectives:

Teach children about Hindu way of life (culture, scriptures, festivals, history, great personalities, philosophy and more); Develop a confident and proud Hindu identity among the children; Promote a sense of community, service; and Develop leadership skills.

Structure:

Balalahari groups meet weekly. Balalahari members, aged 4-14, are divided into 3 groups of age 4-7 (Dhruva Group), 8-12 (Prahlada Group) and 13-above (Markandeya Group). Each group has a designated teacher. The teacher conducts the activities for a particular group. The activities are usually planned in advance for a period of 3 months.

Activities:

Balalahari teachers seek to teach children various aspects of their religion and heritage, and, through this knowledge, impart a strong moral foundation and a sense of identity. Learn bhajans and shlokas, do poojas, crafts, learn about festivals, myths, stories, about gods, and begin to learn the basic philosophies of Hinduism. Balalahari students frequently present plays, shlokas, and songs; and are given the opportunity to meet with visiting swamis and teachers to present their own questions. We have even started 'Sanskrit' classes for the age groups 8 years-above. In addition, the kids are also are quizzed upon their knowledge of various topics concerning our mythelogical stories, which seem to make the kids more curious to learn new things about our culture, our religion, and our history.
